And the Job Hunt Continues

I didn't get the job I interviewed for. Either of them. The first gave completely reasonable feedback: I interviewed well, but lacked key skills that other people who interviewed well had. I'm not going to argue that.

The second, I am happy to have not been offered, based solely on the feedback I was offered. I was told that my answers to two questions seemed vague and not related to the questions. One example was my answer to the question "Give an example of when you provided excellent customer service."

Except I was never asked that question. I was asked "Tell me about your customer service experience."

Those are not the same question. I expect to try to figure out what a user wants/needs from poor information, not a manager who's been in the job 17 years. If that was the kind of "leadership" I was going to experience had I been offered the job, I wouldn't have lasted 6 months.

Back to the hunt.

I've written several times over the years about how much my kids and I enjoy playing LEGO video games, especially the franchise tie-ins, and I appreciate being able to go back and read those older entries and see how that relationship has evolved as the years have gone by. In particular, it struck me that once upon a time I wrote about how Connor would join me in two-player mode on the Wii, but Will never joined in, although he liked to watch and advise us, and would play the mobile versions of the game on the DS or the iPad.

Well, that has officially changed. After assisting me in various areas of the first Harry Potter game over the past couple of weeks, today Will started a solo playthrough of the second Harry Potter game.

The original LEGO Star Wars, the game that started it all, came out the same year he was born, in 2005. So I feel like my love of these games and the lives of my kids are entwined, in a sense. All these years later, I consider the Harry Potter games to be my favorites, so it's a bit surprising to me to realize that I only completed the second Harry Potter game once, although I've played through the first one four times now. I wish they would release a remastered combined game for the Wii U like they did for the PS4.

As near as I can figure, I own all of the LEGO franchise tie-in games except for Indiana Jones 2 and LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. I even repurchased for the Wii the ones I originally played on the Playstation 2. I haven't completed the more recent ones, though, since I got distracted by the introduction of LEGO Dimensions.

This is the first summer in a while that I can remember not having a new LEGO game to play. LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2, which appears to feature the Guardians of the Galaxy, has been announced for later this year, but it will require me to purchase a newer console, so we're probably getting a Nintendo Switch for Christmas. Connor's already asked for one anyway.

Just for fun, I made a chronological table for the various franchise games - not including the LEGO Movie Videogame, LEGO City Undercover, or LEGO Dimensions and its various expansions.

Canon: Final Fantasy IX
Pairing: Amarant Coral/Freya Crescent
Canon Level: Teammates

I have capital-o Opinions on Freya and the canonical end to her character arc. Suffice it to say that I do not agree with it, and that my preference for Freya with Amarant shares a common cause with my dislike of her with Fratley but isn't the reason for my dislike by itself. But Freya and Amarant were built up by the game! Sparks practically flew the first time they met, and they had that nice scene outside the auction house where Amarant opened up to Freya, and then they worked together to defeat the Fire Shrine. They had an understanding between them, warrior-to-warrior. Amarant respected Freya, probably liked her company and cared for her well-being. Freya got Amarant, something not many other people did, because I think she saw something of herself in him. I really, truly believe they would have been great together.

Canon: Final Fantasy VII
Pairing: Zack Fair/Cloud Strife
Canon Level: Friends

Somewhere about halfway through Final Fantasy VII, I was so thoroughly confused by what in the world was going on with the plot that I decided to go read fic in the hopes of clearing things up. (It certainly wouldn't have been able to make my confusion any worse.) And promptly fell down the Cloud/Zack hole but good. I like Zack's friendliness and general happy-go-lucky attitude, but it's his complete devotion to the people he cares about that really gets to me--and Cloud is definitely one of those people. I feel like it's only natural that Cloud would be drawn Zack's bright spirit. And the thing that makes them work for me is that Cloud has just as much devotion as Zack, only it's a little harder to see at first. I feel like Zack was able to see a smidgen of that (one of the few who did see Cloud's true strengths), was intrigued, and determined that he had to get to know Cloud.

Pairing: Akimichi Chouji/Nara Shikamaru/Yamanaka Ino
Canon Level: Friends/Teammates

Aw yeah, Ino-Shika-Chou trio. I have said before why I like Chouji and Shikamaru, but for all that I adore them, I have to admit that they're not exactly a pairing with a lot of energy or grand passion. Ino would bring that in spades. I think she's fiercely protective of her teammates, albeit not in the most obvious ways, and of the three of them, she's the one who'd kick their butts and refuse to let them feel sorry for themselves. She'll force them to experience life rather than sit on the sidelines watching it. I do feel like Ino has a bit more energy than either Chouji or Shikamaru would be able to handle on their own, but with the three of them I think they'd be a good balance.

Canon: Night at the Museum
Pairing: Jedediah/Octavius
Canon Level: Enemies to Friends

They are two tiny people in a world of giants who have been enemies in the past but are now friends. It's practically a grand romance already. Okay, not really, but enemies to friends to lovers does have a long tradition, and I think they'd enjoy turning their us vs. each other rivalry into an us vs. everybody else thing as they explore the museum together and make a place for themselves in the wider, larger world of the museum.

FFBE: E3 and other announcements!

xnera: The Ninth Doctor says, "Fantastic!" (fantastic!)
[personal profile] xnera
I'm making this post public, so feel free to share it with other friends who play!

To start off, let's go over the in-game announcements from this week: the Brave Frontier crossover is back! With it comes the 6* awakening of Tilith who is amazing. Here are her new skills:

* Affectionate Aura - Increase resistance to status breaks (100%) for 3 turns to all allies
* Sealed Light - Remove all status effects from all enemies
* Prism Heal - Restore HP (2500) and MP (50) to all allies except caster
* Radiant Light - Recover HP (100%) to all allies
* Goddess's Revelation - Revive all KO'd allies (100% HP)

This banner is a limited time only, so once it's over, Tilith and friends are gone. She's the best healer in the game, and will be for a good six months or so, so if you can, try to pull for her. Alas, the drop rates for this banner are really, really low. :( So, good luck, everyone!

Now, onto the E3 announcements! As you might know, FFBE's Global one-year anniversary is on June 29th, so we have a lot of exciting stuff coming out!
  • Expeditions - if you've played Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, you'll be familiar with these. Expeditions allow you to send a unit out to perform a particular task. While the unit is out on expedition, it cannot be used in a party. There are special rewards for undertaking expeditions, but it's not clear yet what those are.
  • EX point system - this is a new currency that you get when you purchase lapis, and can be used for items, tickets, and perhaps even a special unit that you can't get any other way!
  • Esper SP reset - did you screw up your grid when training your espers? Not to worry - you'll be able to reset the grid and start over for 100 lapis.
  • Removal of crafting time - All items will be crafted instantly!
  • New Dungeon Tiers Unlocked - Cactuar Dunes, Gil Cave and Enchanted Maze will gain an additional level that drops better units.
  • Story Unit Special Dungeons - special dungeons will be released in which you can only use the seven story characters. The dungeons drop equipment that has special properties for those units, but that can be used on any unit.
  • Sharing summon results - You'll be able to share your summon results on social media
  • Guaranteed 5* base in a 10+1 pull - there's confusion over whether this will be a free pull or not, so start saving lapis, just in case it's not!
  • Free Summon Campaign - get an additional free summon for 28 days!
  • Vault of Hidden Treasures - for two weeks there will be a special, easy dungeon that drops pots, cactuars, and other items
  • Anniverary Special Bundle - there will be a special bundle available for purchase, but we don't know the particulars yet
  • Special daily login rewards - the reward board is supposed to be really good for July, so keep logging in! There will also be a special reward for clearing the whole board
  • 5* vision shards - Right now, you can summon special unit Kelsus from vision shards. There will be more such units in the future, so hold on to your excess shards!
  • Enhancing Units - there will be a rate up chance of getting Great and Amazing results when enhancing units.
  • Half NRG Campaign - dungeons will be half their cost for the anniversary celebration period!
  • All Portals Open - All the portals in the vortex will be open
  • Fujimoto Rainbow Hoodie - players will receive this special equipment. All we know so far is that it is clothes--we don't know the stats.
  • FFX BANNER IS COMING! - Rikku, Tidus and Wakka are coming on June 29th!

For those not in the know, Rikku is the best support unit in the game. She has AoE 100% raise, and her limit burst is AoE Re-Raise! You'll definitely want to pull her. She's a 4* unit, so might be a little tricky to get, but won't be too bad. Tidus is a strong DPS who can chain with himself.

Also! There are rumors floating around that we will be getting Warrior of Light's 6* awakening soon! He becomes the best tank in the game, as he has AoE cover abilities.

That's it! Exciting stuff, isn't it?

Pairing: Big Barda/Scott Free
Canon Level: Married

Yay for happily married couples who love each other. Barda is both bigger and stronger than Scott, something Scott is one hundred percent okay with, which is really fun to read about. It's hard not to like a couple that finds such joy in each other.

Pairing: John Egbert/Karkat Vantas
Canon Level: One-Sided Crush

There is just something super adorable that happens when you combine Karkat's eternal rage with John's complete inability to take Karkat's bluster seriously. Karkat could use some of John's goofiness in his life helping him to chill out a bit, and I think John would find Karkat and his all his differences endlessly fascinating.

no kitchen is new kitchen

"But Tucker, if it's not a forever place, why are you spending high-four-figures redoing the kitchen?"

Three reasons:

1) The stupid cabinets that are too small for the plates to fit in are seriously annoying. It is worth spending money to rectify this, even on a short timescale.

2) It will Increase Resale Value, at least nominally. I'm skeptical as to how much effect home renovations actually have on resale value, but hey, maybe I'm wrong. It will certainly look much nicer, which may have an intangible effect on saleability.

3) It's not that big a kitchen. Any actual homeowners reading this are scratching their heads trying to figure out how we're renovating an entire kitchen for under ten grand. The answer is that this is a tiny 80s condo kitchen, where you can't open the dishwasher and the fridge at the same time, and where two people can technically do separate food-related tasks but they'd better be VERY comfortable in each others' personal space.

And, related to that last one, if I'm gonna be A Homeowner who's not interested in DIYing the heck out of everything, I'd like to have a sense of what goes into a reno project like this. Redoing the tiny kitchen seems like a safeish way to get my feet wet.

Emily stayed home yesterday while the new cabinets got delivered and the old ones got torn out. I stayed home today while the new cabinets got installed. Based on what I've seen so far, IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT TO PAY A PROFESSIONAL TO INSTALL THE DAMN CABINETS. Nobody's kitchen is "cabinet-sized" and things will have to be tweaked to fit, plus there may be, um, "interesting choices" made by previous owners. Like the way there are two different kinds of ceiling drywall in the kitchen over the cabinets, and making them line up is a pain in the neck. I have SO MUCH respect for the guys putting the cabinets in, and occasionally hauling things out to the porch to trim them and hauling them back in.

The wiring in here is substandard enough that the electrician couldn't finish up yesterday, so he'll be back at some point. And Emily's convinced that she can re-hook-up the sink and the dishwasher, at least good enough for a couple of weeks, so the plumber won't be back today either.

So, soon we'll have cabinets, and a temporary sink and counter. Next week the counter-measurer comes to measure exactly how much counter we need, and that ought to arrive in a couple of weeks.

So far, relatively painless. We'll see how it goes once everything is in place and hooked up, and then we'll also need to put in some kind of backsplash. (We had them tear out the HIDEOUS PAINTED-OVER TILE but haven't come up with anything to replace it yet.)
