Getting some very good entries for the contests from last post. Keep 'em coming! I think we'll have fun when they're all collected. :)

Meantime, just a little thing, but...

This post makes me happy.

Yes, I just talked about it in my personal journal, but it seemed worth posting here, too. And hey, someone's got to start this rolling. Might as well be me.

In a way, it's a little thing. Just a short post inviting a Q&A session. But it's more than that. It's a part of the overall Dreamwidth philosophy. Openness. Responsive, responsible management. Management that truly cares about the site. Not about what they can wring out of it. But about making it the best it can be for all participants. To paraphrase the old ad (and ignore the connotations...), they're not just the owners; they're also clients.

The mere fact that they're willing to open the books to us is impressive. The attitude that led to that decision is beautiful. And some of the answers showing up are even more so.

I know it's a little cliche and a little cloying, but... This is a service built with love, and that makes all the difference.

What makes even more of a difference is that the love is guided by experienced and intelligent minds, with a healthy dose of volunteer support and collaboration. Good intentions are nothing without proper direction and guidance.

And, too... there's the idea, implicit here, that the service has a responsibility to us. We're giving them our money and our trust and our time and our content. Opening the financial books shows that what we give them is being used well. Opening the floor to questions (and then responding quickly and informatively) shows... respect. And a conscious effort to earn that trust and live up to that trust. And to give at least as much time and content as anyone else.

It's a playground they've built for themselves. We've been invited in (after all, what's a playground without friends?), but they're making sure to share the toys. And to let us see how it was built, and even let us help build it bigger and better.

It's a lot, from a simple little post. But I suppose that's the nature of dreams.
