I just noticed that Bugzilla 53 has been updated - Allen has written a patch so we will be able to rename userpic keywords and have the entries still keep the right icons instead of reverting to the default if we want. So that's something to look forward to.

Also, [personal profile] yvi has got a new version of the sticky entry module up for review, so we might get that soon.

The queue also includes drafts of v-gifts and reading filters and more styles.

There are some good bugfixes in the latest code tour as well, which will be live with the next code push.

I keep saying this, and it's getting repetitive, but it's also true: Dreamwidth is very cool.

Like [personal profile] angelikitten, I get excited about weekly News posts.

I like that this week's news comments have sparked several chatty discussions and banter.

I like seeing exciting new stuff every time there's a new code tour.

Watching [site community profile] dw_suggestions and Bugzilla is very exciting.

So... what's your favorite thing about Dreamwidth so far? (Answer in comments or with a new entry, at your discretion/preference.)

Also, New Account Fairy accounts have been given out, but I still have invite codes remaining. Personally, I'd rather give them to people who express enthusiasm for the service than just hand them out randomly to people posting in [site community profile] dw_codesharing. One or two others have expressed a willingness to grant requests there, as well, and I'm considering making it a regular deal. Maybe one a month, depending on traffic levels and such? So, please, don't hesitate to direct people there.

1. The new Crossposter automatically converts DW links (like [personal profile] hatman and [community profile] dwrocks) when posting to LJ! Shows up with the correct DW userhead, correct links, and everything. That is so cool.

2. Issue with comments is now actually fixed! If you had trouble with the New Accounts Fairy post, it should work now. Apparently, that setting was changed sometime in the last week or so. For all comms, I think. And I had trouble finding the place to change it. Thought I had, when it was first pointed out to me, but there was a different setting in a less obvious place. Very sorry to anyone who tried to post before. If you had trouble, please try again. Thanks to [personal profile] theresa and [livejournal.com profile] wildblueroses for pointing it out.

Inspired by [personal profile] paidaccountfairy and [site community profile] dw_codesharing:

Dreamwidth rocks. But it only rocks as much as we make it rock. As long as it's filled with people who rock.

I don't have invite codes available, but I do have $42 I'm willing to part with. For $3, you can get an invite code and one month's paid time! So that's 14 new accounts.

Comment here. Tell me why Dreamwidth rocks. Tell me why you want an account at Dreamwidth. Tell me something you love about what Dreamwidth is or what it does. Tell me something you'd do with your Dreamwidth account. Tell me why Dreamwidth would rock more because of you. Anything along those lines, or any combination of the above.

Tomorrow, I'll come back and pick 14 of you. I'd make it a contest, but I don't want you to have to wait longer than necessary. So you'll have to put up with my whims. Sorry if I don't choose you from amongst the flood of awesome people who will no doubt be commenting.

However! If you already have a Dreamwidth account and you have $3 to spare... please feel free to swoop in and help make the site more awesome! Pick someone out of the stream, comment to let us know you're taking care of that one, go to the shop, and make it happen!

Oh, yes. To make it happen, we'll need an email address. Somewhere to send the invite. You can post it in your comment. Or, if you're not comfortable with that, send it privately to me (or the nice person who chooses you).

Spread the word if you can.

Let's go make some awesome!

ETA: Comments now enabled for everyone. Sorry about that. I thought I'd fixed the issue, but apparently there was another setting I'd missed.

ETA2: Half given away, but 7 still remain. And I've got a couple of invite codes to hand out, too. So keep 'em coming!

ETA3: All 14 given out. But I do still have a couple of invite codes. And there's the possibility that someone else will come by to grant your request. Keep 'em coming! :)

Also, quick PSA: You're probably better off typing your email address out the long way (spelling out "at" and "dot"), as some have done. Writing your actual email address can leave you vulnerable to spam bots, which are pretty impressive when it comes to finding publicly posted addresses.

This comm needs to be more awesome. I am not so much with the stylistic magic. Any suggestions for how to spiffify?

OMG! OPEN BETA DAY!!! WOOO!

Okay, now that I've got that out of my system...

I woke up today realizing that I had to make this post. I'm not entirely sure how to put it or how it'll go, but I'm going to give it a shot.

I've been on medical leave for about 8 years now. It's worn on me, as you can probably imagine. I've been stagnating. Losing interest, losing touch with friends. Losing quite a bit, really.

Recently, I've been trying to turn that around. To see what I can accomplish, to find ways to be productive. To reach out and find new social outlets. To find a way to build a life again.

And, just at the right time, I found Dreamwidth. I haven't been this excited about a project in a long time. It's hard to describe why, exactly. Little things. I've rambled on about this before, and still haven't quite pinned it down. It's the way the site is being built. It's the underlying attitude to the founding principles. It's things like the rough guide for support team members. It's... it's a lot of things. It's been enough to grab my interest and hold it for weeks. I've spent hours reading entries, writing entries, surfing around, working on little projects, hanging out on IRC...

I've been making new friends. Meeting new people. Learning new things. Seeing whole new perspectives. Watching it all come together. I've been having fun on IRC, hanging out with the in crowd, the cool kids (though, in truth, with my touch-and-go self-confidence these days, that's sometimes a mixed blessing... but definitely more blessing than mixed).

More, I've been creating again. I've barely written any fic in the last few years, haven't vidded, haven't made much of anything. But now... well, it's not much, but I've been making one icon after another. Quickie projects, mostly, but still... I'm creating.

It's not the whole picture. There's still much I need to do, or to figure out how to do, with my offline life. But... Dreamwidth came around just at the right time for me, I think. Maybe even just in the nick of time. And it's been good for me. A truly positive change, just when I really needed one.

So... thank you. All of you. But especially [staff profile] denise and [staff profile] mark. And the entire dev team.

And today... today is Open Beta Day! One big step forward to making Dreamwidth even more than it is, even more of a reality. And that... rocks.

Slogan poll now closed.

Our official Unofficial slogan is:

Dreamwidth: Imagination Unlimited

Congratulations, [personal profile] adalger!

Our unofficially rejected slogan is:

Dreamwidth: How To Start An Internet Cult For Fun And Profit

Congratulations... [personal profile] adalger!

As promised, both slogans will be added to the community bio, and Adalger will get 6 months' paid time on the 30th. I've also made an icon of the Unofficial slogan, which is now the default for the comm. (I'll see if I can do something with the Rejected slogan tomorrow.)

Thanks to [personal profile] zarhooie, [personal profile] hkellick, [personal profile] chasy, and [personal profile] quiara for your entries. A lot of good ones in there!

Special thanks to [personal profile] foxfirefey for helping me correct a serious blunder in the original post.

Slogan poll will be closing soon. Probably late tonight/early Sunday. Last chance to vote. Or change your vote.

(Meantime, I have to figure out how to close a poll...)

I just noticed the little white on red "18+" icon that appears next to the title of an entry when I mark it as being for adults only. Cool!

Over on LJ, I tend to track a lot of entries in various places so I can keep up with a good conversation. I have always *hated* the multi-step process I had to go through to do it. I just 'tracked' my first DW entry and WOW! A little popup appears, I click the appropriate places and that's *it*! YES! Thank you!

I really like how this worked:

I was looking at an entry of mine, but wasn't logged in. So I logged in using the toolbar. And, instead of refreshing the page and all of that, it just sorta... fizzled in my "edit" and "tag" buttons under my icon.

I have no idea if LJ does that or not, but I'm really quite amused by it in DeeWee.

Yay! [personal profile] trouble posted here! The first post to this comm (or, actually, any comm of mine - there being only the two) by someone who isn't me!

Maybe some more of you could try that?

And... I haven't gotten any new slogans for a while. Keep that in the back of your mind, maybe you'll come up with some. I've got a few already, but would love to have more. Yes, I'm greedy.

Finally, an announcement:

OpenID users: As mentioned in [community profile] dwstones... I've decided that I'd like you to have a voice in these two comms. So, for the duration of Closed Beta, if there's something you'd like to post to either one - something you love about Dreamwidth or something frustrating or missing - leave a comment on one of my posts. I'll post to the comm for you.

It's a bit of an end run. I'm aware of that and not 100% happy about it. But I think, just for this, and just until you have the option to create an account, it'll work out.

I quite like that on DW, when you've already voted in a poll and go back to look at it, it has an auto link to "change your vote in this poll". :) :) :)

Getting some very good entries for the contests from last post. Keep 'em coming! I think we'll have fun when they're all collected. :)

Meantime, just a little thing, but...

This post makes me happy.

Yes, I just talked about it in my personal journal, but it seemed worth posting here, too. And hey, someone's got to start this rolling. Might as well be me.

In a way, it's a little thing. Just a short post inviting a Q&A session. But it's more than that. It's a part of the overall Dreamwidth philosophy. Openness. Responsive, responsible management. Management that truly cares about the site. Not about what they can wring out of it. But about making it the best it can be for all participants. To paraphrase the old ad (and ignore the connotations...), they're not just the owners; they're also clients.

The mere fact that they're willing to open the books to us is impressive. The attitude that led to that decision is beautiful. And some of the answers showing up are even more so.

I know it's a little cliche and a little cloying, but... This is a service built with love, and that makes all the difference.

What makes even more of a difference is that the love is guided by experienced and intelligent minds, with a healthy dose of volunteer support and collaboration. Good intentions are nothing without proper direction and guidance.

And, too... there's the idea, implicit here, that the service has a responsibility to us. We're giving them our money and our trust and our time and our content. Opening the financial books shows that what we give them is being used well. Opening the floor to questions (and then responding quickly and informatively) shows... respect. And a conscious effort to earn that trust and live up to that trust. And to give at least as much time and content as anyone else.

It's a playground they've built for themselves. We've been invited in (after all, what's a playground without friends?), but they're making sure to share the toys. And to let us see how it was built, and even let us help build it bigger and better.

It's a lot, from a simple little post. But I suppose that's the nature of dreams.

Welcome to Dreamwidth Rocks!

The community bio pretty much sums things up. Hopefully, it's self-explanatory.

I would, however, like to take a cue from [community profile] iconic and kick things off with a contest.

I'd considered making it a "best reason/way that Dreamwidth is awesome" contest, but almost immediately rejected the idea. First, because it doesn't seem right to try to put a relative value on that sort of thing. More importantly, though, trying to do that misses the point of the comm.

Instead, I've come up with a contest that's just slightly off topic.

The (Absolutely, Positively, In No Way Official) Dreamwidth Slogan Contest!

Comment on this post with your idea for an unofficial Dreamwidth slogan. Contest is open to everyone, whether you have a beta account or an OpenID. Enter as often as you'd like. All comments screened. All appropriate G-rated suggestions will be collected and posted (unattributed) on Sunday, April 19th. Voting will take place via screened comments. The winning slogan will be posted on the community bio page, and the author (or any email address selected by the author) will get three months of paid time!

(Depending on length, I may even turn it into the comm's main icon.)

But wait, there's more!

The (Absolutely, Positively, In No Way Official) REJECTED Dreamwidth Slogan Contest!

Same rules apply. Comment here with an unofficially REJECTED Dreamwidth slogan. One that's amusing, but which would never ever actually be used. Again, please keep all submissions kid-friendly. As a quick off-the-top-of-my-head example:

Dreamwidth: Because On The Internet, No One Can See Your Seams!

(Get it? Because you can be your dream width? ... Like I said, just something off the top of my head.)

Winner gets three months paid time, and the slogan will be publicly and unofficially rejected in the community bio.

When you're commenting, please mark your submissions as "Unofficial" or "Rejected" so I can be sure to post them in the correct category.

Have fun!
